The results are in for the BCAITC Celebrating Liberation with a Promise Contest held earlier this spring! Planting a Promise program students were invited to enter the photo contest to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands and Europe and to show support for the Canadians that contributed to the end of World War II.

Students could enter the contest in two categories for the chance to win fun prizes. Students who entered in the Individual Category submitted a photo of themselves with Canadian Liberator tulips in their schoolyard with a sign stating "Thank you to our Canadian Soldiers" or a sign that depicted what they felt these tulips represented. Students who entered in the Family Category submitted a photo of their family with the tulips.

More About Celebrating Liberation With a Promise

BCAITC, in partnership with the Dutch Liberation 2020 Canadian Society, Van Noort Bulb Co., and Florissa, spearheaded the Celebrating Liberation with a Promise program. The cross-Canada Canadian Liberator tulip educational program was developed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands and Europe in Word War II.

The Celebrating Liberation with a Promise program provided Canadian K-12 classes with a hands-on gardening experience and education on the history of the Canada’s contributions to end World War II. A Celebrating Liberation with a Promise teaching guide featuring science and social studies curriculum-linked lesson plans was also developed by BCAITC for teachers’ use. The program was also delivered by other Agriculture in the Classroom Canada provincial members to schools in each province. 

BCAITC provided students with the opportunity to plant Canadian Liberator tulip bulbs in fall 2019. Over the winter and early spring 2020, the students observed the dormant and early sprouting stages of the flowers’ growth. When warm spring days arrived, students were rewarded for their hard work with beautiful flowers blooming throughout their schoolyards for all to see. The schoolyards featuring the dramatic red tulips raise awareness and bring honour to the countless Canadian men and women who assisted with the liberation of Europe in World War II.
